Over the past 10 years, BP has invested more than $90 billion in the United States – more than any other energy company. BP is a leading producer of oil and gas, and it produces enough energy annually to light nearly the entire country for a year. Employing about 18,000 people in all 50 states, BP supports nearly 200,000 additional jobs through all of its business activities. To provide the energy that keeps America moving, BP invests in leading-edge technologies that improve energy discovery, recovery and efficiency, as well as enhance safety and reliability. From building the world’s largest supercomputer for commercial research in Houston, to becoming the first company authorized to commercially operate unmanned aerial vehicles over land in the United States, BP is advancing innovation across the country.

To drive the development of energy technologies, BP depends on the brightest people with a strong foundation in STEM subjects to be the geologists, engineers, data scientists and chemists of tomorrow. Almost two-thirds of BP’s U.S.-based employees work in STEM-related roles. That’s why, since 2012, BP has invested about $65 million in activities that encourage students across the U.S. to pursue STEM education – a commitment that earned BP the No. 1 spot on the 2015 and 2016 list of STEM Jobs Approved Employers.

For more than six decades, BP has supported a combination of national and regional initiatives to equip teachers to excel in STEM teaching, to inspire students to pursue STEM pathways, and to mobilize BP employees to make a powerful contribution in STEM. Some of the STEM initiatives and programs BP actively supports include:

Association of Science Technology Centers — BP has partnered with ASTC to develop an energy-focused learning module that will help teachers become STEM facilitators. The training will be offered to both formal and informal educators across the U.S.

Energy Foundations for High School Chemistry
— A BP-sponsored website of chemistry resources developed by high school teachers and the American Chemical Society. The site features lab investigations, demonstrations, student readings and multimedia designed to support existing classroom curriculum.

Katy Independent School District Education Foundation
— In addition to supporting the foundation through STEM-related grants for teachers, BP backs the Cinco Ranch High School robotics team in the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics competition.

The Flying Classroom — A K-8 STEM-based curriculum that uses aviation and exploration to inspire and engage students in STEM pathways. BP sponsors this curriculum for students in Chicago.

Discovery Days — BP’s annual three-day conference that provides high-potential university freshmen and sophomores the opportunity to visit a BP facility, engage with employees and interns, develop leadership skills, and learn about careers in the energy industry.

Ultimate Field Trip — Now in its sixth year, BP’s global competition challenges university students from diverse backgrounds to put their skills to the test in a real-world energy challenge. The competition not only gives them a window into the issues facing the energy sector, but also allows them to learn about careers in the oil and gas industry.

The University of Alaska Anchorage Summer Engineering Academies — A series of week-long, STEM-focused day camps that encourage middle and high school students, including historically underserved and underrepresented students, to pursue STEM careers.

GeoFORCE — A program run by the University of Texas that engages high school students in geosciences by taking them on geological field trips in Texas and throughout the U.S. BP is a long-time supporter of GeoFORCE, through both financial donations and employees’ volunteer participation in field trips.

The Future Energy Chicago exhibit at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry — A permanent interactive exhibit that encourages and empowers young people to envision their own role in our nation’s energy future. The state-of-the-art, multiplayer simulation game uses real-world data to enable students to learn how new energy technologies can revolutionize Chicago’s infrastructure.

Mobilizing BP employees to make a powerful contribution in STEM

Million Women Mentors
— A mentoring campaign designed to attract young women and girls to STEM careers. The campaign reinforces BP’s commitment to STEM education while engaging and empowering BP employees to be STEM champions in their community.

STEM AHORA Student Days
— A national STEM program BP sponsors in partnership with LATINO magazine, which enables BP leaders to connect with high school students, talk about their careers in the energy industry, and share their experiences of overcoming adversity.

BP has a long history of supporting and partnering with professional organizations that are committed to promoting STEM education, including:

  • National Society of Black Engineers;
  • Society of Women Engineers;
  • National Society of Hispanic MBAs;
  • National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (of which BP is proud to be a founding board member, celebrating a relationship that spans 40 years).
