BP is one of the world’s leading international oil and gas companies, providing its customers with fuel for transportation, energy for heat and light, retail services and petrochemicals products for everyday items. BP’s roots in the United States go deep, starting in 1866 with the founding of the Atlantic Petroleum Storage Company in the Pennsylvania oilfields. Since then, their heritage has come to embody some of the most famous names in American energy: Amoco, ARCO, and Standard Oil.
Internships
BP offers paid summer internships that last anytime from 8-12 weeks, depending on the needs of the business. Co-op programs, which typically occur during the academic year, may run longer depending on business demand and support from the student’s university. They offer internships in the fields of Engineering, Science and Business.
Centre for Petroleum and Surface Chemistry (BP-CPSC) at the University of Surrey
BP is to invest up to $7 million to establish a research group at the University of Surrey to study fundamental science and recovery processes related to heavy and viscous oils. These oils form a significant proportion of the world’s remaining oil resources and research is required to improve efficiency and reduce the footprint of development.
Fletcher Technical Community College
BP gave FTCC a $4 million dollar grant to develop its new Integrated Petroleum Technology Center, which is a 29,999 square foot building that includes a 4,000-square-foot training laboratory, classroom space and offices.
Scholarship for STEM Students
In its first year, the $686,880 BP scholarship programme will provide 90 scholarships, each worth $7,632, and will be open to nine universities to support ten scholars each. As the programme is rolled out over the initial four years, it will be expanded year on year, providing a total scholarship fund of up to $6,885,000. The fund will then progress as an annual scholarship programme providing funding of up to £1.8million each year.
National Society of Black Engineers Scholarship
BP partners with the National Society of Black Engineers and other companies to offer millions of dollars of scholarships to their Society each year.
Defined STEM
The Defined STEM program will help 20,000 students from fourth to 12th grades in Trumbull County Schools in Trumbull County, Ohio. The donation covers the cost of the licensing software to make it available in every county classroom. 200 teachers will also be trained during a two-year period from the donation. Students and teachers will learn from a state-of-the-art, interactive web-based program they can access from the classroom or their home.
